Newtown, Pa - We celebrate the life and legacy of Barbara Burton McCardell, who peacefully passed away at the age of 87 on March 7, 2024. Barbara was a beacon of love, joy, and inspiration, serving as a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her remarkable spirit and profound influence enriched the lives of everyone she encountered.
Born in 1936 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Leona and Eugene Burton, Barbara was the eldest sibling to Eugene Jr., Kathleen Blouch, and Jane Zador (John), whom she loved dearly.
Barbara's formative years at Sacred Heart grade school and Ursuline High School, Class of 1954, laid the foundation for lifelong friendships and a commitment to her Catholic faith. Her journey into nursing at St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1957, was marked by dedication and excellence. Barbara further honed her skills with a business degree from La Roche College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After receiving her degree, Barbara dedicated her career to serving others as an administrator of an Alzheimer's wing of a convalescent hospital, where she was admired for her compassion and leadership.
Barbara's essence was her unwavering commitment to her family and friends. She was the heart of gatherings, radiating warmth and joy. Her children, Joseph Knott IV (Gina), David Knott (Karen), James Knott (Shelly), Mary Beth Flatley (Brian), and Kathleen Todd (John), were her pride, raised in Pittsburgh with values of integrity and love. Barbara's grandchildren—Nicole, Joseph, Brian, Erin, Ashley, Ethan, Ryan, and Charles—were the light of her life, each cherished for their unique selves.
Barbara's nurturing spirit was felt by all. She was known for the special care that she provided each of her grandchildren as they came into the world. Her influence was imprinted on the hearts of those she loved and will endure through generations.
We bid farewell to Barbara, preceded in death by her brother Eugene Burton Jr., her adored husband Joseph McCardell, and former spouse Joseph Knott III, with whom she shared her beautiful family. Her spirit, a guiding light, will remain with us forever.
